Whether the parents are earnest in their asylum claims or not. Whether the parents crossed the border legally or illegally:
Americans don't punish children for the acts of their parents.
When parents commit crimes, we don't send the children to prison. When parents die in debt we don't pass that debt to the children. Because again:
Americans don't punish children for the acts of their parents.
[update 6/19/2020]
At the end of the day, the children who crossed the border with their parents were luggage. They didn't have a choice in the matter. They were educated in our schools (at our expense), pledged allegiance to our flag, played in our parks. Imagine turning 18 and being sent "home" to a country you left when you were 5, a country you have a vague memory of.
Even if you can't just remember:
Americans don't punish children for the acts of their parents.
One of the greatest gifts of this country is that all of us can make our own way without assuming responsibility of anyone else's actions. The child of a pauper can become a leader of industry, the child of a criminal can assume the presidency. This is because:
Americans don't punish children for the acts of their parents.
